What does it mean if a college or university says that test scores are “optional”?
Ever since the outset of the pandemic, many colleges and universities are now saying that SAT or ACT test scores are “optional.”
So now you’re wondering if you should undertake the lengthy process of studying for and taking these tests if the schools are not requiring them. I understand completely. It’s not easy studying for these tests, and sometimes it takes 2-3 tests to reach your high score. The entire process could take several months to a year, depending on how often you are studying.
The answer is this:
Depending on the programs to which you are applying, you still might want to take the tests and submit your scores, even if they are optional.
For example, if you are applying to a program that is rather competitive, your test scores could provide valuable insight into your commitment to your studies and your proficiencies in areas such as higher level math and reading.
Furthermore, if you are applying to a competitive program and you do not want to submit test scores with your application, it’s important to remember that you might want to demonstrate your proficiencies and commitment to your chosen areas of study in other ways. For example, maybe you would like to take some AP tests in your preferred areas of study. Another option might be to demonstrate your proficiencies through work on independent projects and long-term activities that challenge you to apply your knowledge and problem-solving abilities. There are endless ways to achieve this demonstration of proficiencies: create your own app, start a non-profit organization, build something, lead a group through a challenging task, provide much-needed support to others, take some college courses, complete an online certificate, write a software program. Whatever you choose to do, it’s up to YOU to showcase your academic development.
In addition to gaining admission, there is also the opportunity of scholarships. If you are able to demonstrate a significant commitment to your studies (through SAT/ACT/AP test scores, grades, and activities), then students are often eligible for all kinds of scholarships. Whether it’s a discount on tuition or a stipend or even a yearly renewable scholarship, you never know what the school will offer you until you apply.
