What should I write in my college essays?
Do you want the long answer or the short answer? The short answer is: whatever you want! No, really. You should write whatever you want. The goal is to convey who you really are and what you stand for! A college application essay is your opportunity to be your authentic self. (Also, please don’t forget to tie that into why you are going to continue your education in college. Not to be obvious or anything, LOL.)
Some people come to me and say, “My English teacher said I should write about this.” Others report to me: “I looked it up on the internet, and this college advisor on YouTube said I should write about these things.” All of this is quite derivative. Instead of just following what other people are telling you to do, write your own story. Write your own path. Write your own future.
If you need some help brainstorming, here are a few questions that might get your creative energies flowing:
Why do you do the things you do?
What do you believe in?
Is there something really important about why you want to educate yourself by going to college?
What is your purpose in life?
What are some of your favorite inspirations?
These are simply questions that might help you reflect on who you really are. When you’re done doing some self-reflection, then you will likely have tons to write about!
Stylistically, does it matter how you write it? Nope. Write a poem. Write a fantasy story. Write a song. Write a memoir. Write a play. Write a scene from a film. Write a letter to your future self. Write a letter to the world. Write a short story. Write a biography. Write a blueprint for your invention. Write a review. Be sarcastic. Be funny. Be dramatic. Be serious. Be artistic. Doesn’t matter. Just be you.
