What kinds of activities can I do over the summer to support my college applications?

Summertime is an opportunity to take a deep dive into disciplines you are considering for your major in college.

While there are endless options, here’s a few ideas:

-Pre-college summer programs held on college campuses (with options to stay in actual dorms)

-Remote pre-college programs (this is a great option if you’re traveling for the summer)

-Volunteer positions (health care facility, animal shelter, community summer camps, municipal pool, etc.)

-Internships (research lab, law firm, interior design firm, museum, art gallery)

-Apprenticeships (designer, artist, engineer, architect, corporate management)

-Shadowing (watching and observing, almost always unpaid)

-College courses for credit at a local community college

-Work part-time or full-time (accounting firm, retail business, e-commerce, etc)

-Field Studies trip (archaeology, geology, marine science, environmental science, etc. living on-site or aboard a research vessel)

-Personal research project (anything that truly interests you!)

-Start a small business

-Start a non-profit organization that benefits a real need in the world

-Build an online community around a relevant topic (using social media)

-Work on a portfolio (visual art, film, media, writing)

Summertime is also an opportunity to get ahead!

-Start visiting colleges. Even though campuses will not be as busy during the summer, it’s still an opportunity to see the buildings and surrounding communities.

-Start working on your college essays (most application prompts can be found online).

-Take a summer class at your high school that might help you get ahead. This can strengthen your transcript AND your gpa.

-Start studying for the ACT/SAT. Take advantage of the extra head space you’ll have since you’re not in school. You might even want to register for a summer ACT/SAT test date.

Whatever you decide to do over the summer, make sure you have some fun! Because that’s truly important. Spend your time doing things you enjoy!
