What is the value of the ACT or SAT?

That’s a very good question! There are many different ways that an ACT or SAT score can be used to your advantage. Let me explain a few here, and if you want to know more, just complete my contact form on my website https://www.holisticacademicdevelopment.com/contact and we can schedule a meeting!

First, these standardized tests are, like all standardized tests, a very limited way to view an individual’s true aptitudes. They only test certain types of knowledge and skills, so if you’re feeling like these tests are not an accurate measurement of your true talents, you’re probably right.

So why are they useful with college admissions?

Well, let’s remember that everyone is coming from different educational backgrounds, from different schools all over the world. So everyone is truly learning different things, even if two people went to public schools in the same school district, sometimes they’re learning different curriculum. Therefore, it’s useful for a university to be able to see where at least SOME of your proficiencies lie. For example, what is your current level of math? What is your current level of reading? What is your current level of vocabulary and grammar?

Second, let’s face it, grades are fairly subjective. For example, I’ve seen both public and private schools where everyone is getting A’s in their AP classes, but then when it comes to scoring well on AP tests, very few of the students are even passing the AP tests. Also, let’s not forget that some teachers are hard graders and some are easy graders. So a university can’t tell that much JUST by looking at your grades. Therefore, a standardized test can sometimes allow them a slightly more in-depth understanding of your proficiencies.

Third, and finally, these tests are an opportunity to differentiate yourself from the rest of the applicants. Many people are choosing NOT to take standardized tests if they are an optional part of the application process. However, having an excellent test score can only help you, especially if you are trying to showcase certain skills that align with your chosen area(s) of study. This can be useful if you are trying to gain admissions into a program where there is limited space.

I hope all that makes sense~!
